About Gran Bwa Heritage Arts

What is Capoeira

Capoeira (pronounced ka-poo-ey-da) is a unique and captivating Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, acrobatics, and culture.

Developed centuries ago in Brazil as a form of spiritual and physical resistance, it is more than a fight—it's a cultural dialogue

Often described as a "game," it is played by two people in the center of a circle called the roda (pronounced ho-da). The players move to the rhythm of live music, engaging in a fluid, non-contact dialogue of kicks, sweeps, and escapes. It is as much about strategy, trickery, and expression as it is about physical skill.

The Three Core Pillars of Capoeira:

  1. Movement (Jogo - The Game): The physical dialogue between two players is graceful, athletic, and strategic. It involves swinging kicks, low sweeps, acrobatic flourishes, and evasive maneuvers. The goal is not to strike your opponent, but to outmaneuver them, create openings, and demonstrate skill, creativity, and malícia (playful cunning).
  2. Music (& Song): The heartbeat of Capoeira. The roda is led by a live orchestra of traditional instruments, most importantly the berimbau (a single-string musical bow). The music sets the style and pace of the game. Participants clap and sing call-and-response songs in Portuguese that recount stories of history, resilience, philosophy, and community.
  3. Culture & Community: Capoeira is not a sport; it is a culture. It was developed centuries ago by enslaved Africans in Brazil as a means of preserving cultural identity, practicing self-defense under the guise of dance, and fostering spiritual resilience. This history of resistance is central to its philosophy. The community, or asociação, is a family built on mutual respect, tradition, and shared learning.

Who is Mestre Carvao

Mestre Carvão

Henry Vizcarra, known in the Capoeira world as Mestre Carvão, was born in Quito, Ecuador. In 1999, at the age of 14, he began practicing capoeira with the only existing group at the time called Grupo Zema, founded in 1993 in Ecuador by José María Da Silva, known as Mestre Zé Maria.

After years of dedication and practice, Henry Vizcarra became a Capoeira instructor and devoted his time to the growth and development of this art throughout Ecuador and Germany, teaching in private, public, and educational institutions. He is also one of the founders and representatives of the international capoeira group Centro Do Mundo, established in 2011 alongside colleagues.

In 2013, Henry Vizcarra received the title of Mestre Carvão, awarded by Mestre Zé Maria and Mestre Paulinho Salmos of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in recognition of his performance, commitment, and dedication to Capoeira.

Today, Mestre Carvão continues to develop his work through educational institutions, private instruction, and social projects that promote the inclusion of children from underserved communities through the practice of Capoeira and Brazilian culture.

His mission is to use his knowledge and experience to support the growth and development of individuals through Capoeira, encouraging healthy living, discipline, cultural awareness, and positive social engagement.

Who is Monitor Manganga

Monitor Manganga

Born and raised in Haiti, Djhondel Gay, known in Capoeira as Mangangá, built his strength and determination through overcoming adversity at a young age. After experiencing bullying in school, he turned to martial arts as a way to defend himself, build confidence, and help others learn to stand their ground. What began as self-protection became a lifelong path of discipline, leadership, and empowerment.

Djhondel has trained in several martial arts systems, including Karate, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Mixed Martial Arts, and Capoeira. Each discipline helped shape his understanding of movement, strategy, self-control, and resilience.

His Capoeira journey began in Florida around 2011, where he first trained under Mestre Betinho. In 2013, he continued his development under Mestre Valu and Mestre Fera, deepening both his technical skills and cultural understanding of the Afro-Brazilian art form. Today, he is proud to partner with Mestre Carvão in the continued mission of growing and sharing Capoeira with new communities.

For Djhondel, Capoeira is more than an art—it is history, resistance, music, healing, and freedom in motion. Through teaching, mentoring, and community leadership, he uses Capoeira to help youth and adults build confidence, discipline, and unity.

In addition to martial arts, Djhondel has studied traditional herbal medicine and natural wellness practices, valuing the connection between physical health, cultural knowledge, and holistic healing.

As founder of Gran Bwa Heritage Art, Djhondel is dedicated to preserving heritage, empowering communities, and expanding the reach of Capoeira through classes, workshops, performances, and cultural education.
